The Nigeria Labour Congress NLC held an emergency NEC meeting on August 20th 2024 to address recent developments concerning the invitation of its President, Joe Ajaero, by the Nigeria Police Force.
The NLC expressed "grave concern" over the invitation of NLC President Joe Ajaero and described it as "a clearly unfounded and politically motivated investigation" into alleged crimes such as terrorism financing, cybercrime, subversion, and treasonable felony. The NLC condemned these allegations, calling them "a travesty and a blatant attempt to stifle the voice of the working people and their leadership."
The NLC noted that instead of receiving an apology from the Nigeria Police Force for the earlier invasion of its national headquarters, the police have embarked on what the NLC described as "a spurious and fortuitous journey of intimidation, harassment, and witch-hunting."
During the emergency meeting, the NLC NEC made several resolutions. The NLC stated that, as a responsible labor center committed to the rule of law and due process, it "shall honor the invitation extended to its President Joe Ajaero by the Nigeria Police." However, the NLC will demand an extension of time given the nature of the invitation. The NLC made it clear that this does not "legitimize the baseless allegations leveled against him."

The Nigeria Labour Congress condemned the continued harassment of its leadership, asserting that this is "a calculated attempt to weaken and destabilize the labor movement." The NLC emphasized that the labor movement has long been a bastion of democratic principles and a voice for the Nigerian masses.
The NLC warned the state to "desist from its evil intentions" and halt the ongoing witch-hunt against the leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress. The NLC asserted that the Congress "will not sit idly by while the rights and freedoms of its members and leaders are trampled upon with impunity by the State."
The NLC NEC directed all affiliates and state councils to "immediately commence the process of mobilizing their members across the nation." The NLC emphasized that it will "not hesitate to take all necessary actions, including mass protests and industrial actions, to protect the integrity and independence of the labor movement."
The NLC NEC further stated that if anything were to happen to the President of the Congress or any other leader of the Congress due to these allegations, all affiliates and state councils are to "proceed on indefinite nationwide strike action by 12:00 Midnight today."
The NLC called on all civil society allies and the general populace to "stand in solidarity with the Nigeria Labour Congress in this critical moment." The NLC stressed that "the fight against injustice and oppression is a collective one," urging all Nigerians to rise in defense of "our shared democratic values."
In conclusion, the Nigeria Labour Congress reaffirmed its commitment to "defending the rights and interests of workers and the Nigerian people." The NLC declared that they "shall not be cowed or intimidated by these desperate attempts to silence us" and vowed to "stand firm in our resolve to uphold justice, fairness, and the rule of law in our beloved country."
This specific communiqué has not yet been widely reported by major news outlets. However, the Nigeria Labour Congress NLC has historically been a significant voice in the country, often making headlines with their strong stances on labor rights and governmental actions.
