The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) reaffirms that the nationwide mass protest continues. Learn more about their stance and the need for government dialogue
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has clarified its position on the ongoing nationwide mass protest, following a statement that has been widely circulated on social media since August 1st, 2023. The NLC wants to reassure the public that the protest has neither been reconsidered nor suspended.
The statement in question, which originated from the NLC, was issued in response to various disputes with the government, including the breach of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on June 5th, 2023.
However, the NLC emphasizes that this statement does not pertain to the ongoing national protests.
In their press releases dated July 22nd and 23rd, 2024, the NLC made it clear that the protests are within the constitutional rights of Nigerian citizens and urged the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with the leaders instead of resorting to unproductive rhetoric. The NLC firmly believes that sincere dialogue is the most effective way forward.
Benson Upah, the Head of Information and Public Affairs at NLC, reiterated that their stance remains unchanged. The NLC continues to advocate for genuine government engagement with the protest leaders as the key to resolving the ongoing issues.
