Record Low Number of Undocumented Migrants at the Southern Border Following Biden's Crackdown
The number of undocumented migrants at the southern border has hit a record low following President Biden's crackdown. Learn more about the factors behind this decline.
The number of undocumented migrants crossing the southern border has reached a record low, according to recent data, following the implementation of President Joe Biden's "crackdown" executive order.
In July, federal statistics reported that 56,400 asylum seekers arrived in the U.S., marking the lowest figure in the past four years.
The Border Patrol released just 12,000 people from detention in July, a significant drop compared to the 28,000 in June, 68,000 in May, and the record 193,000 in December 2023. The decline in numbers is largely attributed to the expedited deportation process, which has become a deterrent for many migrants.
The immediate release from detention, previously a common practice, allowed migrants to remain in the country for years before their court cases were resolved, making the recent changes particularly impactful.

Another factor contributing to the decrease in migrant crossings is the rising summer temperatures, which pose a substantial risk to those attempting the journey. Additionally, a "crackdown" by Mexican authorities on migrants moving toward the U.S. border has further reduced the influx.
The combination of these efforts appears to be having a tangible effect, with the number of migrants reaching historic lows.
