The rise of large migrant camps in Mexico City, fueled by U.S. policies, has led to overcrowding, disease, and rising tensions with local residents. Read more

The intensifying pressure of U.S. immigration policies has led to the rapid expansion of migrant camps in Mexico City. As the U.S. continues its strict stance on illegal immigration, thousands of migrants have found themselves stranded in the Mexican capital, unable to proceed northwar.

These makeshift camps, often referred to as "ranchitos" or small ranches by the migrants, are becoming semi-permanent fixtures, with some growing into what resemble small towns.

One of the largest of these camps is located near a church in La Merced, housing approximately 2,000 migrants, including a significant number of children.

While some migrants prefer the autonomy of these camps over the shelters, which enforce curfews and strict rules, the conditions are far from ideal.

Disease outbreaks have become increasingly common, particularly during bad weather, as the camps struggle with hygiene and basic living conditions.

The situation has also sparked friction with local Mexican communities. In one instance, residents protested by blocking traffic and chanting "The street is not a shelter!" as tensions rose over the increasing number of migrants occupying public spaces.

Sonia Rodriguez, a 50-year-old migrant from El Salvador, recounted disturbing incidents of violence against migrant children in the camps, reflecting the growing hostility they face.

Despite the challenges, many migrants remain hopeful that they will eventually be able to cross into the United States, often pinning their hopes on the CBP One program, which facilitates their meetings with U.S. border officials. Until then, Mexico City serves as an uneasy refuge for these desperate travelers.
