A tragic incident has unfolded in Nasarawa State, Nigeria, where a university student was allegedly beaten to death by military personnel. The incident has sparked widespread protests and calls for justice

A wave of shock and outrage has swept through Nasarawa State, Nigeria, following the tragic death of a university student at the hands of alleged military brutality. Timothy Achinya, a mechanical engineering student at the Isa Mustapha Agwai Lafia Polytechnic, was reportedly tortured and killed by unidentified soldiers.

The incident occurred after a student named Samuel Ejembi reported some students to the military for alleged involvement in cult activities. The soldiers apprehended the accused students, including Achinya, and detained them. According to the Students Union Government (SUG) President, Jacob John Mutuwa, Achinya succumbed to injuries sustained during the alleged torture.

The news of Achinya's death has ignited widespread anger among the student body, prompting the Acting Rector, Dr. Nurudeen Mu'azu Maifata, to seek a legal resolution. The SUG President has condemned the brutal act and called for justice for Achinya and his family.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has also joined in the calls for justice, demanding swift action from the authorities. NANS Zone C Coordinator, Comrade Daniel Friday Egga, has accused certain military personnel from the 123 Special Force Battalion of being involved in the murder.

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Nasarawa State Command, DSP Ramhan Nansel, has assured the public that the matter is being investigated. However, the incident has raised serious concerns about the conduct of military personnel and the need for accountability.

The tragic death of Timothy Achinya is a stark reminder of the urgent need to address the issue of human rights violations in Nigeria. The government must take decisive action to ensure that such incidents are thoroughly investigated and the perpetrators brought to justice.
