Namibia has approved the culling of 723 wild animals, including elephants and hippos, to address severe drought and food shortages. The meat from these animals will be distributed to affected communities

Namibia has officially approved a controversial plan to cull 723 wild animals, including elephants, hippos, and zebras, due to a severe famine impacting the country. The decision aims to manage wildlife populations and provide meat to communities suffering from the extreme drought.

The culling plan involves the targeted shooting of 30 hippos, 60 buffalo, 300 zebras, 83 elephants, and 250 antelopes of various species. These animals will be selected from national parks where populations are deemed sustainable.

The meat from the culled animals is intended to support those most affected by the drought, helping to alleviate food shortages in the hardest-hit areas.

So far, 157 animals have been culled, yielding 56.8 tons of meat, which has been distributed to local communities. The authorities are focusing on ensuring that the culling process is conducted in a way that balances ecological concerns with the urgent need to address food insecurity.

The decision to cull wildlife in response to a humanitarian crisis has sparked debate. On one hand, it provides immediate relief to people facing starvation; on the other hand, it raises ethical questions about wildlife management and the long-term impact on animal populations and ecosystems.

As Namibia continues to grapple with the effects of the severe drought, the culling plan reflects the challenging choices faced by authorities in managing both human and environmental needs.
