The U.S. team has come first in this event at 10 of the last 13 Olympic Games. This is also the eighth Olympic gold for Caleb Dressel.
The women's team previously won a silver medal in this relay, ironically losing to Australia. The athletes from China were third.

They finished just behind the Australian team, which set an Olympic record with a time of 3:28.92. The Americans narrowly beat the Chinese team by a tenth of a second, clocking in at 3:30.20.
